The literal meaning of Balijatra (also written Bali Jatra or Bali Yatra) is “Voyage to Bali”. It is a unique socio-cultural event with a history of a thousand years, commemorating the past association of the people of Odisha with Bali and other South-East Asian countries.

Celebrated every year from Kartika Purnima in the historic city of Cuttack on the bank of the river Mahanadi, the seven-day festival in November is observed as the largest trade fair in Odisha, and lakhs of people throng to enjoy it. Through the celebration Odisha showcases its culture, art, temples, monuments, distinctive architecture, elegant textiles and special cuisine — refreshing the memory of Kalinga's glory and promoting tourism.
